2019 NEWS AND CHANGES Welcome to all our new sailors and we’re so happy to have our old sailors back again!! Registration is now open for the 2019 summer season, with classes from June 17 through August 16 - so we know there is a two week period that will fit your schedule! Why should your sailor do two weeks - because it really helps in learning the skills and practicing boat handling. They get to practice the basics more, be on the water more with their hands on the boat’s tiller, get more class discussion on what makes the boat go and why. The repetition, as in any sport, is key to getting their sailing skills going. So, if at all possible, plan to enroll your beginners for TWO WEEKS to really see them bloom as sailors. And you don’t pay the membership fee for any second or subsequent weeks. We again offer two week intermediate and advanced classes, while our youngest sailors have one week classes. INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED SAILING COURSES Intermediates/Advanced – these classes are two weeks long and give students a chance to solidify the skills that establish their confidence for successful sailing. It also helps prepare them to continue on with advanced dinghy racing and into sailing teams at the HS/MS ages. Throughout our area, from Harve de Grace all the way to Southern Maryland, there are sailing teams for students in the 8th through 12th grades. And colleges all over the country have competitive, travelling sailing teams. SMSA High School Sailing Program The SMSA Advanced Dinghy Racing class is specifically designed to advance young sailors’ skills for participating in MS/HS sailing teams. SMSA offers a HS/MS Racing Team program that features 10 week sessions in the fall and spring as a member of the Interscholastic Sailing Association. Your young sailor can continue sailing through these team events with after school practice and training plus optional weekend interscholastic junior varsity and varsity racing programs. Teams from throughout our area, VA, MD, PA, NC and up and down the Atlantic coast, participate in a variety of regatta opportunities. Our philosophy is for our junior sailors to have fun, sail safely and courteously….and winning is nice, but the fun and teamwork are really important.
