(put title here)

For those of you who missed the notice in the Clew a couple of months ago, you may be surprised to learn that Julian Tsai and Judy Johnson are leaving their posts as editors of the Clew after three years in harness. I want to express my sincere appreciation to them, personally and in the name of SMSA, for their long service to the club. The editorship of the Clew is one of a very few non-elected positions within SMSA that takes a year round effort; every month the Clew must go out. Thank you, Julian and Judi. Well done.
A couple of schedule notes. There will be no meeting of the Board of Governors in August. The September meeting of the BOG will take place on Tuesday evening, September 1, at 1930 in the clubhouse. The BOG is considering moving its regular meetings from the first Thursday of the month to the first Tuesday of the month as a number of its members are involved in the Thursday evening Small Boat Races.
John Weir, Commodore

MINUTES FROM BOARD OF GOVERNOR'S MEETING, JULY 2, 1998

OFFICER'S AND BOARD OF GOVERNOR"S PRESENT: John Weir, Jan Buckler, Rod Schroeder, Karen Donehoo, Maggie Weir, John Herbig, Jim Young, Barbara Herbig, Kris Dennie-Young.

Commodore John Weir called the meeting to order at 1948 hours.

Commodore – John Weir announced that he would like for all Governors to review their respective sections of the club's budget. The proposed by-law changes will be reviewed and voted on at the July 2, BOG meeting. Those that are approved will be included on the ballot for the September 13, 1998 Annual meeting. John will provide the approved items to L.G. Raley for inclusion on the voting ballot. John stated that SMSA is a non-profit but not a charitable organization. Rod Schroeder agreed to obtain further information on these classifications. The BOG will not meet in August. The September meeting of the BOG will take place on Tuesday, September 1. Future discussions about changing the meeting night of board meetings will be discussed at a future BOG meeting.

Secretary - The June 2, 1998 minutes were reviewed and approved with two corrections.

Treasurer- Rod Schroeder announced that the budget is tracking along as planned. The club's membership projections have exceeded our membership goal for the year. The personal property taxes for 1997 have been filed.

Vice Commodore – Jan reminded everyone that the head on the race committee boat is a porta-potti, which needs to be cleaned at the conclusion of every race.

Race Governor – Jerry Taylor was not present.

Cruise Governor – Rick Farman was not present.

Junior Governor – Jim Young presented Rod with several checks for student payment for the upcoming junior sailing camp. Jim announced that all of the classes are filled. The ratio between members and non-members is approximately 60/40. Jim has received a good response for the Sunday races with an average of 23 children participating each week. The first Junior Club Regatta will take place on July 12, at 1330 at the clubhouse. The regatta will be a high point race. The safety boat is working well and is 95% ready for the upcoming camp. Jan Buckler will determine if we can get insurance replacement value on the safety boat; the boat is old enough that the cost to replace it might be considerably more than its book value. Four used Optimist (Opti) sailboats were recently purchased for the junior sailing camp from the Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC). The boats will have their own Opti sail number assigned. This will enable them to be raced in events with the United States Optimist Dingy Association (USODA). Jim will submit a request to have the registration transferred from AYC to SMSA. Jim commented that the junior program is currently under stocked with assets and that the club should think about procuring additional assets which would be used for both the junior sailing camp and the Sunday program. In addition, Jim expressed that a floating dock is needed for the junior program. Jim received applications for junior membership from the following individuals: Mary Beth Pillian, Sam Forsyth, Matt Forsyth, and Sardi Forsyth. Three future applications will be received from Cody Landry, Molly Reemers, and Charlie Reemers. Jim will send out an e-mail seeking provisional BOG approval for these applications since there will be no August meeting. The Board will follow up with formal consideration of the membership applications of these Juniors at its September meeting. A "Geezer Squeezer" regatta for anyone over the age of 22 will take place on August 29. An insert with additional details and information will be included in the August issue of the Clew newsletter. Information about the club's junior program will be included on the SMSA web page in the near future.

Women's Governor – Barbara Herbig had nothing new to report.

Rear Commodore – Ron Hoile was not present.

Membership Governor – Maggie reported that she had received one application for new club membership. A motion was presented and the board approved the application. The new member is Denise Yale.

Social Governor – Kris Dennie-Young reported that an article about social highlights will appear in the July issue of the Clew. The article will provide clarification of the difference between Rendezvous and Mini-Rendezvous. Kris is currently completing a list of club members e-mail addresses. Information about the club's social activities will be included on the SMSA web page in the near future. The 1998 Awards Banquet will take place on January 9, 1999 at the NAS Patuxent River Officer's Club.

Publicity Governor – John Herbig reported that he is looking for volunteers to replace the current Clew Editors, Julian Tsai and Judi Johnson. Their last issue of the Clew newsletter will be the September 1998 issue.

Facilities Governor – Dan Watters was not present.

Old Business – A motion was presented to propose an amendment to the By-laws to create a Small Boat Governor position on the BOG. A discussion took place among board members and was followed by a voice vote. The motion was voted down. A second motion was presented to establish a Young Adult Membership Category for persons between the ages of 18 and 22 that would not convey a vote. The annual dues for this type of membership would be $70. The motion was presented and approved and will be included on the ballot for the proposed amendments to the By-laws. A third motion was presented to raise the cost of an annual Junior Membership from $20 to $40. A vote was taken and the motion was approved and will be included on the ballot for the proposed amendments to the By-laws. The approved proposed amendments will be voted on at the SMSA Annual Meeting on September 13, 1998.

The next Board of Governor's meeting will take place at 1930 hours on September 1, 1998 at the SMSA clubhouse. All members are welcome to attend.

John Weir adjourned the meeting at 2155 hours.

CRUIS
?N THE BAY
cruis
?n (kroo? zen) v. 1. What you do when your dreams become a reality. Congratulations Dave!

On the weekend of August 8-9, PATRIOT with Jay and Mary Hanks will lead the Mixed Couples Race/Cruise to Battle Creek. This has become one of my favorite raft-up venues. Hope to see you there.

On August 22, Terry and I will serve as cruise leader cum race committee abroad MORNING STAR. We will be on station in the mouth of the river by 0830 and will monitor channels 16 and 78 all day. If you haven't been to Cambridge in awhile, you should definitely plan to join us. The town has become revitalized over recent years and has much to offer. The municipal boat basin offers reasonable rates, friendly assistance, and free bicycles. Remember that we need to get a count of individuals for dinner at the Cambridge Yacht Club and a count of boats wanting slips in the yacht basin. Please contact me by phone or e-mail (see yearbook) if you are interested. If there is not enough interest to warrant a group dinner, I will contact those who have expressed interest so they can make alternate plans.

The month of September is chock full with cruises every weekend. Please refer to the cruise schedule or the Clew for details. The only change to the schedule is that the
?alternative? Labor Day cruise to Ragged Point has been canceled. Personally, I?m thinking of going ?Island Hopping? that weekend. With everyone in Crisfield for the Labor Day weekend, it might be a nice, quiet time to visit Smith and Tangier Islands. If this interests you, let me know.

ALWAYS A DISTANT ANCHORAGE, Hal Roth, 348 pp., paperback, International Marine, 1997.

Hal Roth and his wife Margaret are legends among Chesapeake Bay sailors. Hal has raced solo around the world solo and together they have completed several circumnavigation's. Always a Distant Anchorage recounts one of these voyages together. A successful author, Roth has written a number of based on their exploits. Unfortunately, I didn
?t find this is to be one of his better efforts. Maybe I?ve read just one too many of this type of book. But I found Moitessier?s Cape Horn: the Logical Route and Moore?s Gentlemen Never Sail to Weather to be both more informative and more entertaining.

Strawberries
Sour Cream
A chunk of Dark or Semisweet Chocolate

Wash and dry the berries, you can leave the caps on.
Grate the chunk chocolate into a bowl. Dip the berries into the sour cream and then into the grated chocolate.
Arrange on a plate and keep cool until needed.

Strawberries out of season. Try substituting kiwi, peaches, bananas, fresh pineapple or whatever fruit you have available. On second thought, I don
?t think I?d try tomatoes. Thanks to Elaine Lussier of NJORD for sharing this with us on the Memorial Day weekend cruise.

Is your head messed up? You could call Dr. Laura. But if the problem is only a nasty odor, you can go to http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow.phall.htm where you find an excellent treatise on marine sanitation written by Peggie Hall (Peal Products).
Rick Farman, Cruis?n Governor

The season is half over, but there is still plenty of racing left. We hope to see some new faces out for the second half. I recently got the Artful Dodger hauled, so I have run out of excuses also!!

The Mixed Couples Race/Cruise is on August 8
th and 9th. Jay Hanks, the contact person, is making a few changes this year, so read his article elsewhere in the CLEW for details. The Solomon's Pier Regatta is on Aug. 15 and 16th. This is an informal event with two days of river racing. We will have two Non-Spinnaker classes based on ratings and yes, provisional ratings will be assigned to anyone not having one. Solomon's Pier Restaurant has ordered some beautiful awards, so come on out and have a good time. See the article elsewhere in the CLEW for details.

Next on the schedule is the Vice Commodore's race/cruise to Cambridge on Aug 22. This is the one time of the year when the racers and cruisers get together for an overnight event. Kris Young has arranged an excellent dinner at the YC with members of the Eastern Shore Sailing Association. Please give Kris a call for reservations.
Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend since I will be trucking my daughter off to college that weekend. Rick Farman has graciously agreed (right, Rick?) to be the cruise/race leader, so please contact Rick for slip reservations. The YC has great facilities for such an event. On Friday, September 11, we will have the 20th Annual Smith Point Race which starts in the evening.

If there are not enough boats for a start on Wednesday nights in either the Spinnaker white or blue fleet, then the boats should race in the Non-Spinnaker class. We must stick to the racing instructions previously published. I also want to remind everyone that there is NO minimum number of races needed to qualify for Wednesday night high point. There are enough races left for the second half to enable everyone to compete, so come on out and try your luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jerry Taylor, Race Governor

The second half of the Wednesday night race series started on July 1. The number of boats at the start line continues to grow after a slow start. On July 1, twelve non-spinnaker, three white fleet spinnaker and four blue fleet spinnaker boats crossed the start line. "Artful Dodger" made her first appearance of the season. Welcome back, Jerry! We hope to post increasing numbers of boats as the season progresses.

We have had many different volunteers handling race committee duties each Wednesday night. All have done an outstanding job with challenging course selections and timely race results. Thanks to Stew Buckler for posting race results on the SMSA web site. Wednesday night first half overall
results are now posted for your review. Go ahead, pick them apart, a couple of seconds here, a bad tack there........

The second half is your chance to shine after all the lessons learned in the first half. Encourage more boats to come out and race and check out the SMSA web site for crew listings. Good racing and see you on the course.

Joe Frost, Wednesday Night Race Coordinator

This is one for everyone. Rules below. A chance for cruisers to try a relaxed-rules race, on an interesting course up the River, without prior handicap rating, registration or fee. Just make the boat go, see your progress compared to others with similar performance, and see how you do.

A chance for racers to do it up the river and then experience the relaxation and ambience of a raft in a quiet creek. Bring fenders and lines to raft, and an anchor for the night. Beyond that, the happy hour is BYOB and a snack of some kind if you can. The raft breaks up for the night. See page 22 of the Yearbook for guidance.

Rules for Mixed Couples Race/Cruise:

  1. No limitations on sails, but handicaps will be in accordance with those used.

  1. Take your own start and finish times and report them to the Cruise Leader.

  1. Report sails used, including spinnaker.

  1. Start between 10:00 AM and 10:20 AM, when "6A", off the Solomons bears 045 Mag from your boat headed up the river.

  1. Keep all river marks on the proper side.

  1. Boats on starboard tack have right of way over boats on port tack; thereafter boats close hauled over running free; overtaken over overtaking.

  1. Be nice. No Penalties except verbal during the raft

  1. Finish when "20" off Battle Creek bears 047 Mag [there is a shoal between it and the Battle Creek entrance].

  1. No time limit. The raft will form around 4 PM.

Would appreciate a call. Come and enjoy.

Summer Camp
By the time you read this, our first summer camp session will be long over and we'll be almost done with the second session. We have had full enrollment for both sessions. When the kids weren't fighting hot weather or no wind, they could be seen darting around the harbor or out in the Patuxent. Visits to the Calvert Marine Museum and Calvert Cliffs occupied their time during no wind days. Based upon this years events, we will be restructuring the program next year to account for Screwpile and to offer basic and advanced sailing. Thanks to Skip Zahniser, Jim Sharkey, and Z's for hosting the camp again this year and providing a tent and the use of their facilities.

Sunday Sailing SMSA
We held our first regatta (in 6 years??!!) on July 12. With only three boats available, we ran two sets of races. Congratulations to Cody Landry and Allison McKinney for winning their respective sets. Each set had a practice race for warm up. Results follow a couple pages back.

Thanks to Shawn Stanley and Jim Hagy for the use of their lasers. We will be holding races on the following dates: August 16, September 26, and October 4. If you would be willing to lend your laser or sunfish for these events please give me a call.

As soon as the summer camps are over, we will be asking for volunteers for Optimist fiberglass repair and maintenance. Please give me a call if you are interested in helping.

Summer is on its way out…. Hopefully you had a chance to attend the Screwpile Races or post-race parties, what a great time!!!! Next on the agenda is the Solomon's Pier Regatta on 15 & 16 August. One-hour after the last boat finishes on each day, there will be a post-race get together on the Solomon's Pier Deck. I'm sure the participants would appreciate your support. The following weekend is the Vice Commodore's Race/Cruise to Cambridge, which will offer an opportunity for the racers/cruisers to raft-up and plan some fun evenings.

Mark August 29
th on your calendars for our next club rendezvous. The club will provide crabs, hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, condiments, & beverages for a cost of $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 12 and under.
THIS IS AN RSVP EVENT IN ORDER TO PURCHASE ENOUGH FOOD. PLEASE RSVP NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, 23 AUGUST. Payments will be taken at the door at the rendezvous.

This rendezvous will immediately follow the first "Screwed-up Pile Regatta", i.e. Optimist racing for adults! See your CLEW for more race information.
Members need to bring a side dish or dessert to share as well as extra crab hammers, paper plates & utensils for their family and guests.

As always, please call if you have any questions. See ya in August!

*OPERATIONAL SCHEDULE CORRECTION*
Please delete the 19 September Rendezvous listed in your yearbook. The only Rendezvous in September is on 13 September following the Annual Business Meeting.

On July 2, 1998 the BOG considered the application of Denise and James Yale (sponsored by Trish Tice) for membership and voted in the affirmative. Denise became acquainted with SMSA at the Marcy Rendezvous at Zahniser's and joined the racing women the next day on Chareta. They have a Catalina 25 and are interested in both racing and cruising.

I have just received an application from Alfred Tittel (sponsored by Don Deese). He used to live in the area and is a past commodore of the Spring Cove Yacht Club. He has a Hunter 35 and looks forward to cruising with the SMSA membership. His application will be presented to the BOG at its next meeting in September.

Please welcome these new and prospective members!
         Maggie Weir, Membership Governor

Jan and I are editing "the Clew" until a more permanent editor is found… As you saw in the July edition, Judi had a very severe break of her leg. Judi has expressed thanks to all SMSA and I have included her response in part:

"...I started working full days since Monday and it kinda wears me down. Please tell SMSA members THANK YOU SO MUCH for the flowers. Such a kind gesture while I was house-bound for a couple weeks. I won't know how fast I am healing till I get back to the Doc in a couple of weeks. I am drinking lots of milk so hopefully I will be without crutches in 3 weeks. He says total healing time will be 5-6 months….."
We certainly join the Commodore and all other members in expressing gratitude to Judi and Julian for all the time and effort put into "the Clew" over the past few years…

Please forward any articles, ads or announcements for the Clew to Jan and me at
sbuckler@olg.com in MS word for Win95 format, to ease the transfer of your files into the Clew format.

Please note, your BOG is looking for someone to be the Clew editor on a more permanent basis. Note the Publicity Governors comments in the minutes of the July meeting above.
