The 2008 Junior Sailing program will include day camps, an advanced junior sailing program, a Sunday afternoon program and racing events.

Summer Sailing Day Camp

The sailing camps will follow the U.S. Sailing curriculum, led by a U.S. Sailing certified instructor and two assistants. Sailing day camps will be held at the NEW SMSA club house on Solomons Island. The camps accepts children ages eight (8) to eighteen (18). All camp participants will need to become SMSA Junior Members unless they are already members or their families have memberships. Membership fees are already included in the camp tuition. The curricula will include instruction in both basic sailing and advanced sailing. Advanced sailing will focus on racing skills, boat speed and the finer points of competitive sailing. There will be eight, one-week sessions this year. All eight weeks will include an Opti camp. Based on interest of advanced juniors instruction on the FJ’s will be considered. FJ’s are only recommended junior members that already know how to sail but want to learn advanced boat handling skills. The FJ’s are also recommended for High School team skippers and crew members. Participation in the advanced FJ sailing camps will be up to the discretion of the camp director, based on sailing skills and experience.

Our camp fleet includes ten (10) Optis, and twelve (12) FJs. We have a safety boat and a number of kayaks which accompany our sailors on their drills. PFD’s are required and each student must pass a basic swim test.

Registration for the day camp will be held on the SMSA Clubhouse as part of the Opening Day activities or registration forms with deposit can be mailed to the address on the form. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Since junior club membership is now a requirement, no preference will be afforded existing club members. A $100, non-refundable registration fee will be required at the time of sign-up. For camp tuition fees, click here for the Summer Camp Registration Form.

  Advanced Junior Sailing Program

Designed for juniors who have completed an Advanced Opti program in prior years or are actively sailing with a high school team, this program will focus on developing racing skipper and crew abilities.  It will run from June 16 to August 15 with three sessions per week.  Details and sign up registration forms can be found here.

Sunday Afternoon Program

The Sunday program is intended to provide additional opportunities for young sailors to practice new skills and refine existing skills. This program is open to all junior members of SMSA. We envision these outings as family-oriented sailing adventures and require parents to attend. The Sunday sessions are open to ages six (6) through eighteen (18). The Sunday sessions will generally begin at 3 p.m. and conclude by 6 p.m. Both Optis and FJs are available for use in these informal regattas. Other small boats such as lasers, el toros, and small centerboard boats are welcome. Sailor under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent at all times.

The safety boat will be on the water and assistance is available for small boat launching from the clubhouse. The program takes place at the Clubhouse and in the nearby waters of Mill Creek.

Sunday Afternoon Sailing Program

The SMSA Junior program is currently looking for SMSA members to volunteer (over the age of 18) to help host the Sunday Afternoon sailing program. The program is also looking for junior members to help run the shore based operations. If anyone is interested in helping support please contact the Junior Chair.

Junior Program Racing

Junior Program Racing will occur throughout the year with several informal events. Sailors will be required to attend the on-shore skippers meeting for race details. Program interest and participation will determine the number of racing opportunities held. Details will be available in the Clew and also through the Junior Chair.
